The first battle between the US Army and the North Korean Army didn't go the way either side had expected
The war in Korea was less than two weeks old, but already Communist forces had overrun Seoul and were driving hard for the southern tip of the peninsula. The small South Korean army was retreating in disarray. They were battered and disorganized and demoralized.
The US sent a small group of 540 soldiers to block the road south and try to stem the North Koreans long enough to organize a defense. This small band of men was about to face the might of an entire North Korean tank regiment.
